This is a description of my attempt at making a more prototypal shaped class 40, using components from both the new Bachmann model and the older Lima one.
Unlike how it is presented in some magazines (Where does Model Rail get this junk? oh yes, they have their heads so far up Bachmann's backside their shoes are getting brown!) Anyway, there are many problems with the Bachmann model (as highlighted by the Rail Express Modeller Review.)
With this in mind, and the fact that the lima body is a relatively straight fit on the Bachmann chassis. (All that is needed are the ends rounding off slightly, and the lugs removed from the inside of the body.
Apparently the model is almost finished being painted (thanks Rich) and will be running on Dagworth at Ally Pally. Photos will be uploaded as soon as I get it!
The windscreen area undertook major surgery to get the typical EE look (with a central flat and angular screens.) this was combined with the craftsman etch to correct the shape of the windows.
Other work involved removing the beading around the radiator grills, allowing a good fit of the Bachmann frost grills (funny that the only good bit of the model is not made by Bachmann!
Finally the fitting of a Shawplan roof fan and grill.
In all this work took very little time (especially compared with my Deltic and class 37 projects) and has produced in my opinion a model that looks the part.
